  Cdr Windslow and Bill Newby: Re-enlistment for 6 more Aug. 1962

  
  
  

  William "Bill" Newby was born January 29th, 1939, in North Little Rock Arkansas to Thomas and Florence Newby. Bill was the older brother to Carlton Newby. He graduated high school in 1957 and started his career, fueled by his love of photography by working for the North Little Rock Democrat Gazette. A year later on November 3rd 1958, he begun the journey to what would be his proudest life accomplishment---enlistment and service in the United States Navy. Bill served his first four-year enlistment in navy squadron [Light Photographic Squadron 62 (VFP-62)], NAS, Cecil Field, Florida and received his first Good Conduct Award. He would later go on to serve for 30 years in the U.S. Navy as a Naval Photographer - with 11 years as a Camera Control Systems Maintenanceman, 8 years as a Photography Special Instructor, and, 5 years as a 3M Systems Coordinator. Bill was stationed all over the country including: Key West-FL, Albany-GA, Norfolk-VA and Pensacola-FL. He retired in 1987 as a Master Chief E9 rank.
  
  Bill was happily married to his surviving loving wife, Betty Hand Newby for 57 years. Bill and Betty were the proud parents to William "Brent" Newby and Marcus "Shane" Newby.
  
  Some of the happiest times for Bill was when he was fishing. Whether he was deep sea fishing for sail fish, or fly fishing in the front-yard-pond, he was certainly happiest with a fishing rod in his hand. He instilled his love of fishing down to his children and grandchildren.
  
  Bill was affectionately known as the "Apple Computer Guy." He loved working on and fixing computers, helping others with technical problems, or just figuring out what the was latest technology to come out for the year.
  
  The family will have a private burial at Barrancas National Cemetery.

• From W. T. Newby's "VFP-62 Guest Log" post: I was in VFP-62 1960-64 and made PH2 in 1961. I remember someone that deployed on the Shang, Bob Russell. I remember Art [ Scarborough]. He was the line CPO after Max Marbut. There was a couple of PH2's that I seem to remember, but cannot remember their names. Maybe something like Buell. I was the lead 2nd class and I worked the line always. I was the night film runner when Kennedy was shot and moved to the early morning preflight crew at the end of my tour. I made several build ups to the Caribbean and was flown out to the Enterprise durning the [Cuban Missile Crisis] blockade due to PH2 Williams' lung collapsed. After returning to Cecil Field started the build up for Enterprise 1963 cruise with PH2 Sees and PH1 John Orslack and another PH, I cannot remember his name. PT Peter Kissa was the PT and Ltjg Satterlee the AI officer. LCDR Kelt was the OinC. AM2 Peter Wallace and I pulled many a liberty together. 1964 I went to Photo School as and instructor then on to 10 years in the RA5C community.
